Remembered as a navigator, shipping entrepreneur, prominent Quaker, and abolitionist, he played a key role in the colonization of Sierra Leone by American slaves.
During the late 1815 expedition to Sierra Leone, he carried nearly forty African-American colonists, including nearly two dozen.
