Unable to afford a university education, he worked for an insurance company called Lloyd's of London. After serving in World War I, he devoted himself to a career as a writer.

During the early years of World War II, he and his wife established a boarding house in Brighton, England. He died at the age of sixty-nine from a dental infection.
