An English author, poet and biographer of the late 19th, 18th and early centuries, he is best remembered for his biography William Cowper. His other notable works include A Philosophical Essay on the Old Maids and The Triumphs of Temper. His fame made him a reasonable candidate for the 1790 English Poet Laureateship, but he declined the honor.
