Romantic-age organ, conductor, and pianist who is known for his works "The Carnival of Animals," "Samson and Delilah," and "The macabre Danse." Piano concerto No. 2, Cello Concerto No. 1, and the 3rd Symphony also remained popular long after his death.
He became the first critically acclaimed composer for motion capture, "The Assassination of the Duke of Guise" since 1908.

His perfect pitch was discovered while he was still two. He performed his premiere concert when he was five, accompanied by a Beethoven violin sonata.

He never knew his father, a government employee who died three months after his birth. He married 19 year old Marie Laure Emile Truffot in 1875 at the age of 40. He had two sons with her. Both sons died in 1878.
