Although he also had a successful career as a conductor, this German musician is best remembered for composing major operas (including Salome and Der Rosenkavalier); symphonic poetry (including also sprach Zarathustra and death and the Transfiguration); and lieder and orchestra pieces (including, respectively, the Last Four Songs and Metamorphosen).
His 1888 melody poem, Don Juan, is considered his first mature work.

He grew up in Munich, Germany, and received his first musical education from his father, prominent horn player Franz Strauss. He composed his first musical composition at the age of six.
