An American writer of Southern Gothic fiction, O'Connor is known for her 1952 novel, Wise Blood, and for her 1955 collection of short stories, A Man Good Is Hard to Find. She was the 1972 recipient of the US National Book Award for Fiction. She was diagnosed with lupus in 1951 and was given just five years to live. However, she lived another fourteen.
