An early 19th century born in England pseudo-Scottish, she was known for pieces of historical prose such as Tales Round One Winter Hearth (1821) and Coming Out (1828). One of her most successful works was The Scottish Chiefs, an 1810 historical novel about William Wallace.
The French version of his work, Scotland Chiefs, was banned by Napoleon Bonaparte.

As a child, she woke up around four in the morning to start reading and writing. She published an early novel in history, Thaddeus of Warsaw, in 1803.

She was born in Durham, England and, after the death of her father, moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. Her remarkable romantic life is said to be recorded in the romance novel, Sir Edward's Seaside Diary.
