Famous for his papers on the subject of evolution, this award-winning 19th-century naturalist independently developed the ideas of natural selection around the same time that Charles Darwin became known for his important theoretical formulation.
He presented the "Wallace effect" hypothesis, which posits the idea that natural selection protects against the crossbreeding of animals. Also an expert in biogeography (the study of the distribution of different species), he travels extensively and conducts research in both the Malay Archipelago and the Amazon basin.
