Martha Catherine Kearney is an Irish journalist and television broadcaster. She is best known as the main presenter of BBC Radio 4's noontime news program The World at one.

Martha Catherine Kearney grew up in an academic environment; Her father Hugh Kearney was a historian who taught at Sussex and later taught at the University of Edinburgh. During her primary school years she was educated at St Wilfrids RC School, Burgess Hill, Sussex, during which she briefly attended Brighton and Hove High School, later completing her secondary education at the school. George Watson College in Edinburgh. From 1976 to 1980 she read classics at St Anne's College, Oxford.
During her final year at Oxford, she worked as a volunteer at the hospital radio. She began her journalism career at London's central business district, LBC.
In 1998 Kearney became a presenter of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. In 2000, she became political editor of BBC Two's Newsnight program and she was a regular presenter of Radio 4's Today programme.
Kearney left Newsnight on 23 March 2007. Then on April 16, 2007, she became the main presenter of the noontime news program Radio 4; however, she remains a regular presenter of Newsnight Review.

Family life info

Her father, Hugh Kearney, was a prominent British historian. Kearney married Chris Shaw senior show director at Television Five in July 2001 in Depwade, Norfolk. The couple now live in Suffolk, where Kearney is also a part-time beekeeper.
