She was raised by the philosopher and author of her father, William Godwin, after his prominent feminist mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, died just ten days after giving birth to her. She married Percy Bysshe Shelley after bearing him an illegitimate child and after his first wife, Harriet, committed suicide.
