French poet, playwright, and novelist whose famous works include Chatterton, Stello, and Les Destinees. His last work, Daphne, was published posthumously in 1912. His writing had a philosophical bent; he was one of the first authors of the Dharma to study Buddhism.

He became an officer in the Maison du Roi elite in 1814, but left his post to marry. During this time he also published his first poems.
