Who is Civil rights leader Moorfield Storey?
Remembered as the first president of the NAACP, this activist and attorney held the office from 1909 until 1929 and also edited the Law Review of America and headed the American Bar Association. Before his time, he advocated for the rights of African Americans, immigrants, and Native Americans.
In the early twentieth century, running as an independent, he launched an unsuccessful United States congressional campaign. He was the person who overturned a Kentucky division law in the 1917 Supreme Court case Buchanan v. Warley.
