Perhaps best known for his Christmas songs "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas" and "Up Above the House," this nineteenth-century composer also wrote a hymn titled "Who He Was In Behind Stall?" Additionally, he composed a popular song, "I love Nelly Gray," which tells the story of a slave who was separated from his love.
He died in his thirties of tuberculosis.
