In the early 1970s while running a coffee shop, he would frequent a local guitar shop in Toronto. His career started by performing guitars in cafes around the city. He then hitchhiked to Vancouver in search of "fame and talent" before finding success back in Toronto, where he played his first children's concert.
His parents died within a few hours each other in 1995. His brother, Onnig, is a renowned portrait photographer and his sister, Ann, commissions information and privacy for Ontario.
