Michael Essien started his football career at hometown club Liberty Professionals; then in 2000, he moved to France to play for the Bastia team for three seasons and then moved to Olympique Lyonnais. Here, he and his team won the Ligue 1 championship twice; In 2005 he moved to Chelsea club with a high transfer fee that made him the most expensive African player in the world at that time. At this club, he, along with other players, won two Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League title, four FA Cup winners and one League Cup in which he scored two goals in 2006-2007 season and 2008-2009 season. In addition, he was once voted the best goal scorer of the season at Chelsea
