"History" is the greatest historical work of China, one of the famous history books. most famous in the world. In particular, this history is also an outstanding literary work of mankind. This great history has described the entire history of China covering 2,000 years from Emperor to the day Hanwu Emperor. This historical work is also the development foundation for later Chinese history.
Since childhood, Sima Thien was very fond of reading, and read many books on history and literature. At the age of 10, he learned Quoc Ngu, Ta Truyen, The Ban and memorized famous poems of the previous period. He studied under Confucius An Quoc and Dong Trong Thu. At the age of 20, he was supported by his father, so he started traveling around China. He has collected many evidences and historical documents. The purpose of this trip is to verify legends and rumors, and to visit historical sites such as Dai Vu's tomb. He passed through Yunnan, Shandong, Hebei, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Hunan...
After this trip, he was selected as Lang Trung with the task of inspecting investigated each ward with Han Vu De from 122 BC - 116 BC. After that, the service ordered to inspect the regions of Ba Thuc, Cung, Tac, and Kunming, that is, the regions that the Han Dynasty had just conquered in the Southwest. In the North, he reached the Great Wall and Soc Phuong. In 110 BC, his father became ill, so he called him back to continue the business. Sima Dam has a wish to complete "Spring and Autumn Ta Thi Truyen". Sima Thien succeeded his father, he received the post of Thai historian. That position both wrote history and wrote about astronomy and made a calendar, but it was a small official, so others looked down on it. In 104 BC, he and several others revised the calendar. He collected all the documents in the books of the imperial library.
In 99 BC, he accidentally got involved in the Ly Lang and Ly Quang Loi case. These are two martial officials who failed to complete their mission in the battle of the Xiongnu in the North. While Emperor Wu and many great officials in the court believed that the crime belonged to Ly Lang, Sima Thien defended this general. Through this, he implicitly criticized Ly Quang Loi as the brother-in-law of Emperor Han, so he was sentenced to death. Emperor Wu ordered that if Sima Thien did not atone for his sins with money or torture (castration), he would be executed. Because he did not have enough ransom, he chose to castrate and was locked in prison.
After he was released from prison, he was promoted to the position of Lieutenant Commander, this is a great official position and was able to be close to the king, to be able to go in and out of the palace freely, to see secret documents, this position usually only for eunuchs. Occasionally he was accompanied by Emperor Wu on patrols. Not being allowed to hold the position of Thai historian anymore, he felt humiliated by the punishment, so he devoted himself to writing the "History", and completed it in 97 BC. When he died, no one noticed, so it is not clear what year he died. According to the Thai historical records, he died at the age of 60, ie 86 BC, the same year as Emperor Wu.
The "History" not only records the overall history of China, but it has great significance in literature. In "History" described the character and events in China. Even the child critics praised it as "skillful description". In addition to "History", Sima Qian also wrote eight satirical poems, among them one about his passion for history writing, and another about his great suffering in the Li Lang case. .
