Phan Vu Minh is known as "Phantom player in a wheelchair" with his journey through 30 provinces and cities on his wheelchair.
At the age of 12, after many times of back pain and difficulty walking, Minh was diagnosed with spinal vascular malformations. The disease is rare, there is no cure in Vietnam, Minh is the second case in the country to have the disease. A lot of pain, weak limbs, the family put all the money to take Minh to many places for treatment. At the age of 20, the spinal cord suddenly swelled, extinguishing all hope at that time, Minh could no longer walk. He left Saigon and returned to Vinh Long to live, leaving university unfinished. In the countryside, the air is open and comfortable, which is better for recovery. In order not to have to depend on his parents, he is independent in his personal activities.
Getting used to a wheelchair is a big difficulty for Minh. One person was once free on his bare feet, then one day "tied" in a wheelchair. At first, it was difficult for him to move. Then gradually, the feeling of shyness disappeared, he masterfully walked with his new "best friend". Then Minh started doing business, looking for a suitable job to earn income. Up to now, Minh has been selling bonsai for 5 years. Wanting to go to more places, explore new lands, make up for the period of serious illness, Minh thought, "Why don't I go backpacking?". And his journey begins here.
With his idea, Minh asked a brother who studied mechanics to build a 3-wheeled vehicle from a wheelchair. The first long trip in 2017, Minh chose the destination as Bac Lieu. When passing through each city, Minh often rests and eats along the way such as boxed rice and bread. He restricts going at night, except in reluctant cases, especially when he has to cross passes and rapids. He often chooses the right hotel or motel to spend the night, the next morning to explore the scenery and nature. In the future, if he has an international driver's license, Minh hopes to be able to drive himself through Cambodia to visit a friend who used to undergo rehabilitation treatment. Minh wants to go by himself, not depending on any other means. His dream, is Laos, Thailand, ... to experience the interesting and new. "But for now, we have to go all the way to Vietnam," Minh said.
