An award-winning author and muckraking newspaper, he is also the co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. His 1927 biographies, The American Orchestra and Theodore Thomas, won the 1928 Pulitzer Prize.
In 1909, following an ethnic riot in Springfield, Illinois, he became one of the four founding members of the NAACP.
