A Jewish-American short story writer and novelist, she is best known for The Pagan Rabbi and Other Stories (1971), The Putteresser Papers (1997), and other works that focus on the lives of Jews in America. His 2010 novel, Foreign Service, was nominated for both the Jewish Quarterly Award-Wingate and the Orange Prize.
She was bullied at school for refusing to sing Christmas carols.
