Le Dan, whose real name is Le Huu Phuoc, is one of the first directors of Vietnamese cinema. He is remembered by the audience through many films such as: Mr. Mentor, Loan of Velvet Eyes, Statue, Black Cactus, Thien Mu Bell, Tinh Lan and Diep, Pictures from Son My... the film has brought a name to many actors such as: Kieu Chinh, Tham Thuy Hang, Viet Trinh, Bang Chau...
He graduated from the Paris Film Research Institute (France), the Academy of Fine Arts in the 1950s. After returning home, director Le Dan started making films. such as: Thien Mu bell, My school, After curfew, My house, Newly blooming flowers, My village... In 1983, he received a special prize at the 6th Vietnam Film Festival with the film "The Statue". . In 1992, he won the 10th Silver Lotus Award in Vietnam for the movie "Black Cactus". This film also brought director Le Dan the Vietnam Cinema Association A Award in 1994. In 1995, he made the film "The Red Earth Daughter", a film about the life of the heroine Vo Thi Sau.
In 2010, director Le Dan embarked on a reality show. show "Letters from Son My" based on a story about the American soldiers massacred 504 civilians in Son My (Quang) Ngai) on March 16, 1968. This film was honored to attend the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.
On February 26, 2016, director Le Dan died in Ho Chi Minh City after a long time in a deep coma due to a stroke. The ceremony to pay his respects was held at his home at 123/30 Phan Van Than, District 12, Ho Chi Minh City. He was buried by relatives at Binh Duong cemetery.
