A famous Russian writer of the nineteenth century, he is best known for his 1835 novel, Taras Bulba; 1842 his play, married; and short stories like Diary of a Madman, Portrait, and The Carriage. His literary works, alternately characterized as realistic and romantic, contain components of grotesque and surreal.
In satirical works such as Government Inspector and Dead Souls, he addresses the political corruption of the Russian Empire.
