Best known for her dozens of suspenseful romance novels, she published best-selling works such as A Kiss Remembered; Rising temperatures; French Silk; and Mean Streak. She has won both the Romance Writers of America Lifetime Achievement Award and an International Thriller Writer Thrillermaster Award.
Her pseudonyms include Erin St. Claire, Laura Jordan, and Rachel Ryan.

After briefly studying at Texas Christian University, she worked as a television weathercaster in Texas and reporter. She published her first novel, Encore's Love, in 1981.
In the late 1960s, she married radio journalist and documentary filmmaker Michael Brown. The couple raised children named Ryan and Rachel.
