He grew up in South Carolina and Virginia and moved to Canada in 1968 to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. He studied English literature at the University of British Columbia during the 1970s.
Gibson's father died of choking on food when Gibson was a child. His mother died when he was in his late teens. He later had two children with his wife, Deborah Gibson.
