A prolific writer and Scottish poet of the late nineteenth-century, he is known for such works as The Voice of the Earth, A Fellowe and His Wife, and The Children of Tomorrow. He wrote several of his works, including Mount Lovers and The Laughter of Peterkin, under a pseudonym.
He sometimes writes under the female pseudonym of Fiona MacLeod. This fact remained a secret throughout his career.
