Jazz artist who became an unlikely hero of Australian jazz after bringing his band to the country in 1928. His all-black jazz band won a great deal of attention. Attention in Australia is mostly white - too much attention, in fact, when the group allegedly conducted with white women and made drugs. Amidst much publicity, he was expelled.
