In 1919, Edith Head graduated with a bachelor's degree in literature and correspondence with honors in French from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1920, she completed her master's program in emotional languages from Stanford University and became a teacher of French at Bishop's School in La Jolla. After a year, she transferred to teach French at Hollywood School for Girls and attended evening classes at Chouinard College of the Arts.
Growing up in California, she and her family changed places frequently. There, she began her career as a costume sketch artist at Paramount Pictures. Though inexperienced in design, she soon became a costume designer for silent films that opened with the 1925 film The Wanderer. From the 1930s she became a household name. of the Academy for creating a new kind of costume design and winning the title for a Dorothy Lamour sarong. She became a fashion consultant for many audiences, especially the top female stars in Hollywood. She made a deep impression in the chiffon dress she designed for Ginger Rogers in the movie Lady in the Dark in 1944.
She is also the author of two books called The Dress. Doctor (1959) and How To Dress For Success (1967) describe her career and design philosophy; These two books were later re-edited in 2008 and 2011.
She worked there for 43 years until March 27, 1967, when she moved to Universal Pictures until her death. . In the late 1970s, her designs were used in a series of television miniseries and the comedy Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid was her last film project.

She was born into a Jewish family, her father Max Posener was a naturalized American citizen from Germany and her mother Anna E. Levy- the daughter of an Austrian and Bavarian. She had two marriages, her first to Charles Head in 1923, and then ending in 1938. She then married film director Wiard Ihnen in 2012. 1940 until her husband's death in 1979 from prostate cancer.
