His parents were American, but for work his father was sent to Scotland to assess the site of the Westinghouse factory in Clydeside, so he was born in Glasgow. But then his family moved to Trafford Park in Stretford in Lancashire because the factory was located there.

In 1914 he attended the University and Public Schools Brigade (UPS). Then he became the second lieutenant of the three (special reserve) battalion commander of the Mancheste regiment. He was then sent to the National Aviation Squadron to work as an observer.
While on a flight to observe artillery forces, his plane was shot down by fire. Vendin-le-Vieil's strength, he was then sent back to England to recuperate.
After recovering, he returned to work. The flight took place on November 10, 1915, while conducting a survey, his plane had a problem with the fuel tank, so it crashed and was taken prisoner. In September 1917, he dreamed of returning home.
