In 1887 his family moved to Cork in Ireland.
In May 1893, his father rejoined the army, his family moved again to Meerut, India. Here Edward contracted malaria and lost his life.
As a child, he was not interested in games but had fun hunting birds and rabbits. As he got older, he developed a passion for fishing. In addition, he is also passionate about shooting, playing the violin and many other musical instruments. After the war ended, he moved with his family to Canterbury, England.
After high school, he worked at the national telephone company as an office worker. After three years his health was somewhat affected, he switched to engineering. In 1911 he moved to Wellingborough in Northamptonshire. He then joined the army and served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC).
In 1913 he was promoted to lieutenant.
