A French film director, playwright, playwright, poet, journalist, he was also a French resistance fighter during World War II. Although regarded by French film critics as one of the most important 20th-century filmmakers, he and his work are little known outside of his home country.
He entered his film, El Otro Cristobal, in the 1963 Cannes film festival.
