He received the 1982 Levinson Prize and a 1987 Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets.

He earned his sophomore in French literature from Emory University in 1965 and later received a master's degree in the same subject from Columbia University. He published his first book of poetry, All the Way at Once, in 1976.

He met his wife, Ann Jones, while studying in France on a Fulbright scholarship. After his divorce from Jones, he was in a relationship with architect Walter Brown from 1971 to 1976 and with poet and critic J.D. McClatchy from 1977 until 1989.
