He started writing poetry when he was twelve years old. He published a work of his early poetry, The Dog and Cat, when he was in his late teens.
He and his seven children were born in Dsegh, Russian Empire (now Armenia), to a priest father and a storyteller mother. His marriage to Olga Matchkalyan Tumanyan resulted in ten children.
