Ethiopian political figure who headed DERG, the communist military government that controlled Ethiopia during the 1970s and 80s. He was the de facto Head of State from 1977 to 1987 and President of Ethiopia from 1987 until its end. Ethiopian Civil War in 1991.
After the Ethiopian Civil War, he fled to Zimbabwe, where he was offered asylum. He was convicted of genocide in absentia in the Ethiopian Court due to his involvement in the Ethiopian Red Terror.
