Iconic Illinois state senator who, in 1854, famously formulated the Kansas-Nebraska law, allowing settlers in Kansas and Nebraska to decide, through popular sovereignty, whether or not their status would permit slavery. He was the Democratic candidate for President in 1860.
A series of violent confrontations, known as the Kansas bleeding, broke out in the states after his famous act. adopted and this event has been cited by many historians as a precipitating factor of the Civil War.
