After earning undergraduate and graduate degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo, she began working for WBFO Buffalo public radio. In 1975, her program Fresh Air debuted on Philadelphia's WHYY-FM; Ten years later, the program began providing national coverage on NPR.
She grew up in Brooklyn, New York, as a member of a Jewish family. She later settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and married Atlantic Monthly journalist and Village Voice music critic Francis Davis.
