After smashing out in a small match, he hid in a ravine until his father came to get him. He won many skating competitions as a child, and became a professional when he was 14.
He was married to Cindy Dunbar from 1990 to 1993 and Erin Lee from 1996 to 2004. In 2006, he married Lhotse Merriam. He has three sons, Riley, Keegan and Spencer, and one daughter, Kadence.
