The scientist Joachim Frank profile

Who is The scientist Joachim Frank?

Joachim Frank is an American biologist. He is considered the founder of single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). In 2017, he along with 2 scientists, Jacques Dubochet and Richard Henderson were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for development of cold electron microscopy allowing high-resolution structural determination of biomolecules in solution. He also made significant contributions to the structure and function of ribosomes from bacteria and eukaryotes.

With his great contributions to the field of biology, scientist Joachim Frank honored to receive prestigious awards:

  • In 2006 he was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
  • 2006 Member of the Academy National Science Foundation
  • Franklin Institute's Benjamin Franklin Medal of Life Sciences in 2014
  • 2017 Wiley Award in Biomedical Sciences
  • 2017 won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Young / Before famous

In 1963, Joachim Frank completed a Vordiplom (BS) degree in Physics at the University of Freibur and further with a Diplom degree under the guidance of Professor Walter Rollwagen at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. His thesis was titled "Untersuchung der Sekundärelektronen-Emission von Gold am Schmelzpunkt" (Study of the secondary electron emission of gold at its melting point).
In 1967, he received his doctorate at Technical University of Munich. He then joined Walter Hoppe's laboratory at the Max Planck Institute Eiweiss- und Lederforschung (now Max-Planck-Institut für Biochemie) with the research of Untersuchungen von elektronenmikroskopischen Aufnahmen hoher Auflösung mit Bilddifferenz (Study of high-resolution microelectron radiation using differential and reconstructive imaging methods). Then he joined the thesis exploring the use of digital image processing technology and optical diffraction in analyzing electronic microimages and arranging images using cross-correlation function.
The following years. he became a Harkness Fellow in the United States, where he worked with Robert Nathan at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology; with Robert M. Glaeser at the Donner Lab, University of California, Berkeley and Benjamin M. Siegel of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.
In the fall of 1972 he returned briefly to the Max Planck Institute. of Biochemistry in Martinsried - a research institute of the Association Max Planck in Martinsried, outside of Munich in a role as research assistant, working on theories of partial cohesion in electron microscopy. Then, in 1973, he joined the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge as a senior research assistant to Vernon Ellis Cosslett.
In 1975, Frank worked in the Laboratory and Research (now Wadsworth) Laboratory. Center), the New York State Department of Health was also there where he began working on single-particle methods in electron microscopy. In 1985 he was appointed Associate Professor and then (1986) as Principal Professor in the newly established Department of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Albany, State University of New York.
In 1987 and 1994, he went to studied abroad in Europe, a year with Richard Henderson, at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Medicine in Cambridge, and a year with Kenneth C. Holmes, the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg.
In 1998, Frank was appointed a research fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
Since 2003, he has been a faculty member at Columbia University, and he joined Columbia University in 2008 as Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular Physiology, and Biological Sciences.
