The scientist Kip Thorne profile

Who is The scientist Kip Thorne?

Kip Thorne full name is Kip Stephen Thorne, he is an American physicist with great contributions in the fields of gravitational physics and astrophysics.

He is a colleague and longtime friend of Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan. He was appointed the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) until his retirement in 2009 and is one of the world's leading experts on Einstein's general theory of relativity. He continues to do scientific research and science consulting for a number of projects such as sci-fi films Interstellar and LIGO.

After the Collaborative group LIGO science announced on February 11, 2016 the first direct observation of gravitational waves, he along with Ronald Drever and Rainer Weiss has received the Breakthrough Prizes in Fundamental Physics, the Gruber Prize in Cosmology and the Shaw Prize. Even more special is that in 2017 he was one of only three physicists to win the Nobel Prize in Physics "for decisive contributions to LIGO and the observation of gravitational waves".

Over the course of many years. , Thorne has served as a mentor and advisor to many leading theorists who are currently working on the observational, experimental or astronomical aspects of relativity. About 50 physicists have received their doctorates at Caltech under Thorne's direction.

Thorne is known for her ability to convey the excitement and importance of discoveries in gravity. and astrophysics for both professionals and folk. In 1999, Thorne made some speculations about what the 21st century would find as answers to the following questions:

  • There is a "dark side of the universe." universe" was born of objects like black holes?
  • Can we observe the birth of the universe and its dark side using radiation produced from war? time-time, or so-called "gravitational waves"?
  • Will 21st century technology reveal quantum behavior within objects the size of humans?
  • li>

His presentations on topics such as black holes, gravitational radiation, relativity, time travel and wormholes have been included in the PBS program in the United States and the United Kingdom on the BBC.

In 1972, Thorne's research mainly focused on relativistic astrophysics and gravitational physics, with an emphasis on stars relativity, black holes and especially gravity waves [3]. He is perhaps most famous for his controversial theory that holes in tunnels could be used to travel in time [17]. However, Thorne's scientific contribution, which focused on the general properties of space, time and gravity, spanned the entire spectrum of general relativity topics.

In 1984. , Thorne addressed the prediction of gravity wave intensities and their temporal signals as observed on earth.

On February 11, 2016, a team of four physicists The representative for the LIGO Science Cooperation announced that in September 2015, LIGO recorded the signatures of two black holes colliding 1.3 billion light-years away. This remarkable discovery is the first direct observation of the flash of gravitational waves and confirms an important prediction of Einstein's theory of general relativity.

Young / Before famous

From a young age Kip Thorne had a passion for research. He was one of the youngest professors in the history of the California Institute of Technology. He received his B.S. from Caltech in 1962, and his doctorate from Princeton University in 1965. He wrote his doctoral thesis, Geometrodynamics of Cylindrical Systems, under the supervision of relativist John Wheeler. Thorne returned to Caltech as an associate professor in 1967 and became a professor of theoretical physics in 1970, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor in 1981, and Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1991.
In June 2009, he resigned from Professor Feynman (now Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, Emeritus) to pursue a career. writing and making movies. His first film project was Interstellar, he worked with Christopher Nolan

Family life info

Raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he grew up in Logan, Utah, the son of chemistry professor D. Wynne Thorne and economics professor Alison Cornish Thorne.
Kip Thorne has 4 siblings and two of them also became professors.
Thorne and Linda Jean Peterson married in 1960. He has 2 children Kares Anne and Bret Carter, an architect. Thorne and Peterson divorced in 1977. Thorne and his second wife, Carolee Joyce Winstein, professor of biological biology and physical therapy at USC, married in 1984.
