Hoang Nguyen Thanh (born 1995 in Binh Phuoc) is a Vietnamese athlete competing in the marathon category. His best performance at a distance of 42, 195 km is 2 hours 18 minutes 43 seconds at the 2024 Asian Marathon Championships in Hong Kong, China. This achievement helped Hoang Nguyen Thanh reach the TOP 10 overall and break the National record in the Men's Marathon that has existed for the past 21 years. The old record in this content was set by Nguyen Chi Dong in 2003.
In 2022, at the men's marathon - 42km competition track of the 31st SEA Games held at home (the race took place in the My Dinh National Sports Complex area), Hoang Nguyen Thanh made an outstanding achievement. The distinction is to win the Gold Medal.
That was the first time that Vietnamese Men's Athletics had a player win the men's marathon at a SEA Games. After nearly two years since SEA Games 31, Hoang Nguyen Thanh now continues to set a brilliant achievement for himself by breaking the national marathon record - 42km for men.
Previously, the best achievements and results belonged to athlete Nguyen Chi Dong. While still competing, Nguyen Chi Dong won the Silver Medal in the men's marathon at the 2003 SEA Games held for the first time in Vietnam and this athlete's time of 2 hours 21 minutes 51 seconds was also a national record. However, Hoang Nguyen Thanh achieved even more excellent results.
With his career, Nguyen Thanh has had complete achievements from winning the youth championship, national championship, winning the National Sports Festival and the SEA Games Gold Medal, setting a national record for the distance. Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to consider this runner as the most comprehensive person in the Vietnamese men's marathon.
According to shares, Hoang Nguyen Thanh's destiny to become an athlete was not by chance. Thanh admits that he has loved running since childhood, so he always watches athletes compete in many tournaments, especially the SEA Games when shown on television.
His passion for athletics was instilled in him since he was in school (Hoang Nguyen Thanh was born in 1995), so Thanh participated in local student running tournaments and then attended many provincial-level tournaments. After that, Nguyen Thanh was introduced to the Binh Phuoc Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center.
Fortunately, this was the period when coach Bui Luong worked with this athletics unit and he directed Nguyen Thanh to participate in long running to have a solid foundation for his marathon running career - 42km for men.
