Home Depot was co-founded by Bernard. Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill, Pat Farrah and Ken Langone in 1978. Home Depot's direction was to build home improvement megastores, larger than any of their competitors' establishments.
In 1989, The Home Depot became the largest home improvement store in the United States, surpassing Lowe's. In the 1990s, Homedepot. com sought to redefine its market.

In January 2022, The Home Depot announced that Craig Menear would be stepping down as CEO and chairman effective January 1. March 3, 2022, and continue to hold the position of chairman of the board of directors. He was replaced by former executive vice president Ted Decker.
Currently, the company has more than 2,296 stores across the United States, including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. and the territories of the US Virgin Islands and Guam; Canada and Mexico.
