In his youth, he studied at Collège Chasseloup Laubat School (now a High School Le Quy Don). After passing the Brevet Elémentaire exam, he was assigned to be a secretarial civil servant and served in many places from 1923 to 1943, including the Palace of the Governor of Cochinchina (1939-1943). From 1948, he worked as Acting Curator of the Vietnam National Museum in Saigon until his retirement in 1964.
From an early age he showed an early interest in antiques. An anecdote narrated by himself, his mother knew that her son did not like to eat fish sauce. One day, she brought home a whole snakehead fish sauce and said that this is a precious fish sauce because it has been kept for 10 years. So out of curiosity, he tried it and since then he's not afraid of fish sauce anymore.
