His works include Joseph Barrell's Pleasant House, Harrison Gray Otis' Boston Three Houses, John Phillips House, Boston Common, India Wharf Degree, University Hall of Harvard University, and Massachusetts General Hospital Ether Dome.

He returned to the United States to promote the Columbia Rediviva's voyages around the world after touring Europe and learning about its architecture. His first project was the Hollis Street Church, completed in 1788, as was the first station to the United States' war for independence, Beacon Hill from 1789.
His son, Thomas Bulfinch, authored "The Bulfinch Myth," a famous collection of myths from classical Greece.
