American businessman considered one of the "Big Four" who built the Central Pacific Railroad, the rail network which completed North America's first transcontinental railroad. He was also responsible for the development of other major railroads, including the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad.
By developing the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, he helped Guyandotte, West Virginia expand into a new city, named Huntington in his honor.
