Civil rights activist in the Civil Rights Movement who advocated against segregation and was the first school secretary for the Mississippi chapter of the NAACP. The fact that the trials of his killer, Byron De La Beckwith, resulted in two hung judges caused much fury in the African-American community.
His murder and the resulting trials were inspired by civil rights protests, as well as numerous works of art including Bob Dylan's 1963 song "There's only one pawn in their game".
