After earning a law degree from the University of Glasgow, she developed a stand-up comedy act while working for the law firm Dundas & Wilson. She eventually gave up her law career to work as a full-time artist.
The child of Anne Wilkie and university minister and national health director Sir Kenneth Calman, she and two siblings grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. She and her longtime, gay partner organized their civil union in 2012.
