When he was 6 years old, his father took him and his family to a boat to find a place to live.
Initially, his family moved to Gia Hoi (Bac Lieu) to make a living but could not stay here, 9 months later his family moved to Xa Phien (now Long My, Hau Giang province), urgently farming.
After more than 1 year, his family reclaimed 40 public lands, but was taken over by landlords. After that, his family moved to Throat Chang Be (Gia Rai, Bac Lieu) to reclaim land, but in the end the land was also taken. His family was fortunate enough to be taught by a monk who taught the Confucian word of love to build a hut with leaves on public land near Vinh Phuoc An pagoda (now in Ward 2, Bac Lieu town).
At the age of 8, Cao Van Lau was welcomed to the temple by the Venerable Minh Bao (abbot of Vinh Phuoc An pagoda). Since then, Cao Van Lau has both studied Buddhist scriptures and was taught Confucianism by a monk.
In 1903, Mr. Cao Van Gioi asked the abbot for Cao Van Lau to study Quoc Ngu script. But he only studied until the second grade of the second year, then he had to drop out of school because his family fell into a difficult situation.
In 1907, his father was old and weak, so Cao Van Lau had to shoulder the responsibility of taking care of the family.
In 1908, I heard that there was a good guitar teacher in the next village, but he was blind and had a disability in his feet, that was Mr. Nhac Khi. Cao Van Lau immediately asked his father to send him to learn the piano. Because of his love of music and talent, Cao Van Lau learned very quickly, he quickly mastered musical instruments such as zither, stork, pliers, ceremonial drum; and became a core musician in Mr. Yueqi's ancient band.
In 1912, he started singing, in 1919 he worked as a musician in the cai luong theater troupe of Ba Xu (Bac Lieu).
In 1947, he received a special mission to save some cadres captured by the French colonialists, and was able to save them.
