Best known for composing "The Nutcracker" ballet, as well as many symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, and musical chamber pieces.
Destroyed his first two operas, "The Voyevoda" from 1869 and "Undina" from 1870, because he could not be satisfied with the result. His 1874 opera, "The Oprichnik", was the first to existing creative rage of the artist.

He started taking piano lessons when he was five and was able to read music at the same level as his first piano teacher in just three years.
He married former student Antonina Ivanovna Milyukova on July 6, 1877, but had the marriage annulled in September 1877 after it was discovered that they were psychologically and sexually incompatible.
