Bennet Omalu full name is Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu, is a famous Nigerian - American doctor. He was a pathologist and was the first to detect and publish symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a football player while working at the Allegheny County Coroner office in Pittsburgh. He later became chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, California, and a professor at the University of California, Davis, Department of Health Pathology and Experimental Medicine.
At the age of 16 he followed studied medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. In May 1990, he graduated from university with a degree of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and completed a clinical internship. He then served for 3 years in a hospital in the mountain city of Jos. After the presidential candidate Moshood Abiola failed to win the Nigerian presidential election in 1993, Bennet Omalu became disillusioned. He immediately went looking for scholarships in the United States. In 1994 he went to Seattle, Washington to complete a scholarship to the University of Washington. In 1995 he left Seattle and moved to New York City, where he attended Columbia University's Harlem Hospital Center for a course in surgery.
To date, Dr. Bennet Omalu has earned eight degrees. and is currently chief medical examiner for San Joaquin County, California and a professor in the UC Davis Department of Laboratory Medicine.
