General Phung Quang Thanh entered the army from a soldier, then became the deputy squadron of the 64th Regiment, 320th Division, where he always tried his best and held many positions. positions in the Regiment such as Chief of Staff, Deputy Regiment Commander, Regiment Commander. From January 1983 to December 1983, he was sent to the Soviet Union to study. Returning home, he joined the 390th Division and continued to hold the position of Deputy Division Chief cum Chief of Staff, then Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, in charge of Division 390, Division Chief. Then he was transferred to the 312th Division to hold the position of Deputy Director and then Director of the Operations Department - General Staff; Commander of Military Region 1.
From 2001 - 2006, he held the position of Deputy Minister of National Defense, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.
Until the year 2006, at the Xth Congress, Phung Quang Thanh was re-elected to the Central Committee and was elected to the Politburo; then the National Assembly approved him as Defense Minister.
Until 2007; Phung Quang Thanh was awarded the rank of General and held the position of Defense Minister until 2016.
