Sulzberger is the son of Barbara Winslow and previous publisher Arthur Sulzberger Ochs and the grandson of "Times" publisher Arthur Hays Sulzberger and great-grandson of "Times" owner and publisher Adolph Ochs.
Sulzberger graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from Tufts University in 1974. Then, from 1974 to 1976, he was a reporter for The Raleigh Times and a London correspondent for The Associated Press from 1976. until 1978.
