Collins joined the Times in 1995 as a member of the editorial board. From 2001 to 2007 she was the first woman to become the editor of a Thursday and Saturday editorial in the Times. She also co-authored a Blog with David Brooks "The Conversation" at the NYTimes. com. She has been a lecturer in journalism at Columbia University and Southern Connecticut State University.
 
 

Young / Before famous

From a young age, Collins attended Seton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio; then while growing up in 1967 she studied journalism at Marquette University, in 1971 she studied for an M.A at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, she wrote publications for Connecticut publications and, in 1972, founded the Connecticut State Bureau. In 1977, she sold her newsletter to become a freelance writer, which later flourished and became the largest service in the United States. She then moved on to write public affairs editorials for the Connecticut Business Journa.
From 1982 to 1985, Collins worked as a reporter for United Press International. From 1985 to 1991, she wrote columns for the New York Daily News and from 1991 to 1995 for Newsday. In 1995, Collins officially joined The New York Times as an editor. In 2007 she took a break from writing to focus on writing her book "When everything changed The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present" returning as a commentator in July 2007.
In addition to her work As a journalist, Collins has published several books: The Millennium Book, Scorpion Tongues: Gossip, Celebrity and American Politics; America's Women: Four Hundred Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines,... Collins was a former lecturer in journalism at Connecticut State University from 1977 to 1979; and from the fall of 2009 until 2012, Collins co-taught with Seth Lipsky at the College of Journalism at Columbia University. She has been a frequent guest on NPR and on Jon Wiener's radio talk show in Southern California.
